Sending a big payment through RTGS and wondering how long it takes? Here’s a quick and clear guide so you know when the money will show up and what small things can delay the transfer.

What is RTGS and why timing matters

Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) is a system for instantly transferring large-value funds between banks. Timing matters when you’re doing urgent transactions.

Typical timing you can expect

  • RTGS is available 24 hours a day, every day including holidays.

  • Once your bank sends the transfer message, the beneficiary’s bank must credit the account within 30 minutes under normal conditions.

  • If there’s a hiccup (wrong details, bank downtime), the remitting bank must return funds within ~2 hours.

Quick checklist – what affects the timing

  • Beneficiary bank is RTGS-enabled and functioning

  • Accurate beneficiary details (account number, IFSC)

  • Funds available in your account and transfer request submitted

  • Network or bank systems not under downtime

  • Request initiated online (branch requests might take slightly more)

Here’s an example

Say Priya needs to transfer ₹5 lakh at 10 pm on a Sunday. She logs into her net-banking, selects RTGS, and enters details. Her bank sends the message instantly. Within 12 minutes, the recipient’s bank credits the amount. That’s how it works in short.

What if a delay happens?

If more than 30 minutes pass and money isn't credited, check the transaction status with your bank using your UTR number. Often, the issue is the wrong beneficiary details. If funds are stuck, bank must return it within 2 hours under normal rules.

FAQs

Yes — RTGS works 24×7, even on holidays.

Possible issues: wrong account/IFSC, beneficiary bank glitch, or internal bank queue.

Under standard norms, funds must be credited within 30 minutes of the message being received. If not, bank returns funds within ~2 hours.
