Need cash for yourself from your own account? You can use a self cheque. This simple guide shows how to fill cheque for self correctly, what to write, and what to avoid so you can withdraw money without any confusion.

What is a self cheque?

A self cheque is when you write a cheque to yourself. You might do this to withdraw cash or move money between your accounts. It works just like any other cheque, but the payee is you.

Step-by-step: How to fill it

Here’s your quick checklist:

  • In the “Date” field, write today’s date (DD/MM/YYYY).

  • On the “Pay to the order of” line, write your name exactly as on the bank account.

  • In the box on the right, write the amount in figures (for example: “₹ 8,000”).

  • Below that line, write the amount in words: “Rupees Eight Thousand Only”.

  • Sign at the bottom right corner using your usual bank signature.

Here’s an example

Suppose Anjali Singh wants to transfer ₹ 15,000 from her savings account to a linked current account of hers. She writes today’s date, writes “Anjali Singh” on the payee line, writes “₹ 15,000” in the figure box, “Rupees Fifteen Thousand Only” in words, signs the cheque. She then hands it over at the bank counter.

Quick tip & things to watch

  • Use a good pen and write clearly to avoid tampering.

  • No blank spaces after the amount or name—draw short line or slash.

  • Check that your account has enough funds—if not, the cheque may bounce.

  • If your bank requires it, write “A/C Payee” for transfer to your own account.

FAQs

It’s best to write your full name exactly as your bank records it. Writing “Self” may lead to rejection.

Usually you deposit at the same bank branch, but some banks allow deposit at other branches of the bank.

Do not overwrite. Instead void that cheque and write a new one. Errors may cause cheque rejection.

Write your cheque right, and you’re done. Move money smoothly and confidently—go ahead and fill your self cheque today!
