A bearer cheque is a cheque that can be encashed by anyone who physically carries it. Sounds convenient, right? But it also comes with some risk. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what a bearer cheque is and when you should use it wisely.

What a bearer cheque means

When you write a cheque and put “Bearer” or “Cash” in the pay-line, you’ve created a bearer cheque. That means anyone who presents it at the bank can claim the money.
It’s simpler than naming a person, but also more risky.

Key features (quick list)

  • Payee line says “Bearer” or “Cash” so no specific name needed.

  • Transferrable by handing over the cheque, no endorsement.

  • Anyone in possession may present it to the bank.

  • Higher risk if lost or stolen — treat like cash.

  • Some banks require ID if the amount is big.

Real-life example

Suppose Mira owes Raj ₹10,000 and she writes a bearer cheque for ₹10,000 and gives it to him. Raj or someone he gives the cheque to can walk into the bank and withdraw the cash. It’s smooth, but if the cheque is lost, anyone could withdraw it.

How to write a bearer cheque (step by step)

  1. Fill date and amount in numerals and words.

  2. On payee line write either “Bearer” or “Cash”.

  3. Sign the cheque.

  4. Hand it over safely to the person you trust.
Quick tip: double-check spelling and amount before giving it away.

Things to keep in mind

Bearer cheques are useful for quick payment when you trust the person. But since they are like cash, misuse risk is high. If you want more security, use an “Order” cheque (payable to a specific person).

FAQs
