If you’re a salaried employee, you may notice LTA in your pay slip. But what exactly is it? Simply put, LTA stands for Leave Travel Allowance (or Leave Travel Concession). It’s a portion of your salary given by your employer to cover travel expenses when you take leave — and under certain rules, you can claim a tax exemption on it.
What Does LTA Cover?
LTA is meant for travel within India when you’re on leave. Your employer gives this allowance as part of your Cost to Company (CTC). But getting the tax benefit depends on meeting specific conditions.
Eligible expenses generally include:
- Air travel (economy class) for yourself and your family
- First-class or AC first class railway travel
- A/C bus travel where train isn’t available
But food, sightseeing, lodging, and local conveyance are typically not eligible.
Eligibility & Rules You Should Know
- You must be an employee with LTA as a component in your salary — if your employer doesn’t include it, you cannot claim it.
- Travel must be within India and during leave. International travel doesn’t qualify.
- LTA can be claimed for yourself and your family, which includes spouse, children and dependent parents/siblings in many cases.
- The exemption is available for two journeys in one block of four calendar years. If you don’t use it, you may carry over one unused trip to the next block (if you claim the first year of that next block).
- If you choose the new tax regime, you cannot claim LTA exemption — it’s available only under the old regime.
Example to Illustrate LTA
Suppose Karan, aged 35, works for a company with LTA included in his pay. He takes leave and travels with his spouse and one child from July 2024 and spends ₹55,000 on tickets (train AC first class). His employer reimburses the full airfare as LTA. Under his salary, he can claim the full ₹55,000 as tax-exempt LTA provided his travel qualifies and fits into his block period. If it’s his second eligible trip in the current block, he meets the rule. He must submit travel tickets, boarding passes and employer form to claim.
Conclusion
LTA in your salary is a valuable benefit: under the right conditions, you can travel with your family within India and save on tax. To make the most of it:
- Check if LTA is part of your salary structure
- Save travel documents and stay within rules
Remember: it’s for domestic travel, limited in usage, and only under the old tax regime
