Why this matters

When you shift city, change home or just get the address wrong in the first place, updating your address in your Aadhaar card ensures bank accounts, government services and KYC don’t get held up.

Quick checklist – update address in Aadhaar

  • Visit the online portal “Update Address in Aadhaar” or go to a nearby Aadhaar enrolment centre.

  • Fill in the new address details (house no., street, area, city, PIN code) and upload/submit a valid proof of address.

  • Submit the application; you’ll get a Service Request Number (SRN) for tracking.

  • Monitor status, and once approved you can download the updated e-Aadhaar.

  • Keep your address proof and submission receipt safe for future reference.

Real-life example

Say Meena lives in rural Maharashtra and her original Aadhaar address shows her parents’ village. She gets a job in Nagpur and moves there. She logs into the portal, uploads her rent agreement (proof of address), updates her address to Nagpur, gets the SRN and within a few days the new address reflects. Later if she moves again for work, she does it again — because there is no limit.

What about frequency and limits?

According to UIDAI, unlike updates to name, date of birth or gender (which have lifetime limits), address changes do not have a prescribed limit on number of changes.

Some user forums mention there may be practical delays or a “cool-down” of roughly 90 days between major shifts, but this isn’t officially enforced.

So in short: you’re free to change address as often as needed — just ensure you have valid proof each time.

Things to keep in mind

  • Valid address proof is mandatory (rent deed, utility bill, bank statement, etc).

  • Make sure your mobile number linked to Aadhaar is active — you’ll need OTP for approval.

  • Save your service request number (SRN) and download the new e-Aadhaar when it’s done.

  • Even if you change address often, keep records of past proofs in case required.

FAQs

Yes — there is no official cap, you may change address multiple times when required.

Typically, changing address online costs a small fee (Rs 50) if done via the portal.

If your address is outdated, you might face issues in KYC checks, subsidy claims or when services verify your address proof.

Check your address proof and update your Aadhaar today.
