The reason for having an Aadhaar with a new name after marriage is to be consistent with the name changes in your other documents. It saves you the trouble of reconfirming your identity at banks, passport offices, or any other government services.

Quick Checklist to Follow  

Make sure to go with your marriage certificate to the nearest Aadhaar Update Centre. Complete the form by filling in the details of the “Name Update/Correction” section. Provide your old Aadhaar along with ID proof and marriage certificate to the official.  

By paying the fee (which is approximately ₹50), you will receive your URN (Update Request Number). Check the update status through the internet and save the updated e-Aadhaar when it is available.

What documents are required? 

Most of the time a person will be in a position to produce:

• The Aadhaar card carrying the latest details (or just the number)
• Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar
• Good ID proof (PAN, Passport, Voter ID)
• And if the change of surname is via gazette: also the gazette notification

Tip: Make sure you spell your new name the same on every document.
