What is Care Of in Aadhaar Card? Many people see “C/O” but don’t know what it really means. Let’s keep it super simple so you update details correctly.

What does “Care Of (C/O)” mean?

C/O is short for “Care Of”.
It’s used to show the name of the person responsible for the resident at that address. It doesn’t prove ownership of the house. It just tells who you are linked with at that home.

In short: It’s about relationship and identification, not property.

When do we use C/O?

Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Living with parents (example: students)

  • Living with a guardian

  • Minors who don’t have their own address proof

  • Renting a room where the landlord gives address proof

  • Recently moved and using family address

You can write:

  • C/O Father’s Name

  • C/O Landlord’s Name

  • C/O Spouse’s Name (if applicable)

A simple example

Ravi is studying in Pune and lives in a PG. He doesn’t have rent agreement or bills in his name. The PG owner gives address proof. On Aadhaar, Ravi puts:

C/O: Ashok Sharma (PG owner)
Address: Full postal address of PG

This way, his Aadhaar shows a valid and current location.

Is C/O compulsory?

No, it’s optional if your own name is already on the address proof document.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t write S/O, D/O, W/O in C/O field — Aadhaar prefers “C/O”

  • Ensure the proof of address belongs to the same person written in C/O

  • Don’t leave relationship unclear — add full name
