What Is an RC Number?

An RC is like your vehicle’s ID card. Issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO), it shows that your car, bike or truck is registered in your name.
The “RC number” often refers to the registration number printed on that certificate.
What Does the RC Contain?
Here are key details you’ll find in your RC:
- Registration number (the vehicle’s unique plate)
- Owner’s name and address
- Engine number and chassis number
- Fuel type (petrol, diesel, electric etc.)
- Vehicle class (two-wheeler, car, commercial)
- Registration date & RTO code
- Hypothecation info (if the vehicle is financed)
Why Does RC Matter?
Pretty simple — RC proves you legally own the vehicle.
It’s needed for:
- Insurance claims
- Selling or transferring the vehicle
- Getting a duplicate if you lose it
- Police check or traffic stopping
A Real-Life Example
Imagine Ravi buys a second-hand bike. He checks the RC and finds the hypothecation line: “Hypothecated to … Bank.” That immediately tells him the bike is still under a loan. He asks the seller to clear it before buying — smart move, right?
Quick Tip: How to Download or Check Your RC
- Open the Parivahan portal or mParivahan app.
- Enter your vehicle number + chassis number.
- Download the digital RC and save it to DigiLocker — it’s legal proof.
FAQs
Yes — digital RCs in DigiLocker or mParivahan are accepted by traffic police.
