If you want to add or change your surname in your Aadhaar card, you’re in the right place. This quick guide shows you how to do it and what to expect.

What does “adding surname” mean?

Adding a surname means updating the last-name part of your name on your Aadhaar to match your legal name—for example after marriage or adoption. The good news: it can be done fairly easily.

What you’ll need

Here’s a quick list (your “check-box”):

  • Your 12-digit Aadhaar number with mobile registered.

  • A Proof of Identity (POI) document showing your new surname (passport, PAN, Voter ID, etc).

  • If surname change is due to marriage: marriage certificate.

  • Filled-in “Enrolment & Update” form at a centre.

  • Payment of fee (usually ₹50) at the enrolment/update centre.

How to add the surname – real-life example

Suppose Ms. Nihu Sharma got married and wants to add her husband’s surname “Patel” → she wants “Nihu Sharma Patel” on Aadhaar. She visits the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre, fills the form, submits her Aadhaar and marriage certificate, pays fee, gives her biometrics (if asked). Within a few days she uses the URN to check status and downloads updated e-Aadhaar after it reflects.

Step-by-step in short

  1. Visit the official centre (offline) because surname change is still largely done in person.

  2. Fill the Aadhaar update form, write new surname clearly.

  3. Submit your documents listed above.

  4. Pay fee, get acknowledgement slip with URN.

  5. Wait for processing (often a few days to ~30 days). Then download e-Aadhaar from the portal.

Quick tip

Double-check spelling of the surname exactly as your proof shows—one letter off can cause rejection.
