Seen “MCWG” on your driving licence and confused what it means? Don’t worry — this quick guide explains it in simple words and helps you know what vehicles you can legally ride so you stay safe and avoid fines on the road.

What MCWG stands for

MCWG means Motorcycle With Gear. It’s a category on your driving licence in India that allows you to ride two-wheelers with manual gears (clutch + gear shift).

Which vehicles are allowed?

Here’s a quick list:

  • Motorcycles with manual gear systems (any cc)
  • Geared scooters (with clutch or gears)
  • Mopeds with gears
  • Note: Automatic scooters or bikes without clutch often fall under MCWOG (MotorCycle Without Gear) category.

Example to clear it up

Here’s an example: Aman likes his new bike with gears. He has only a licence without MCWG endorsement. He rides the bike and gets stopped by the RTO. He’s told he needs an MCWG licence to ride a geared bike legally. So he applied for MCWG, passed the test, and now rides without worry. In short: geared bike = MCWG endorsement needed.

Why it matters & what if you ride without it

Riding a manual-gear two-wheeler without the MCWG category is risky. You could:

  • Be fined or penalised by RTOs
  • Face trouble in insurance claims if something happens
  • Be disqualified from job roles (delivery, courier) that require MCWG licence
Getting it is a quick step, and avoids big issues later.

Quick checklist before applying

  • You are 18+ years old and hold a learner’s licence.
  • You’ve practiced riding a geared bike (clutch, gear shifts).
  • You gather identity proof, address proof, learner licence.
  • Fill the application for MCWG category at your RTO or online.
  • Pass the practical test for gear handling and clutch control.

FAQs

Yes — MCWG covers geared bikes and also automatic scooters. But note automatic-only licence won’t cover manual gears.

No — MCWG is only for two-wheelers with gears. For cars you need the LMV category.

Typically up to 20 years for young applicants, varies by state.
